Asian American Women: Issues and Concerns
Where do Asian women fit in? This is a great question to answer for those who don't know or want to know the changes that have occurred. There have been many changes in the past that have allowed Asian women to finally shine. In Asia America there has been a lot of internal tensions. In history internal tensions has created a problem for Asian women. This struggle has not allowed women in business. For a matter of decades women were repressed in the homes in Asia, and sought for some freedom in the US, only to find restrictions were still being placed on them there as well. This struggle has led many Asian women to join in an activist approach with Asian women organizations.

The activists are working harder than ever to make sure that not only is there racial equality, but also gender equality. One of the first Asian women organizations did begin in China. During 1908 the Dragon ladies, a group of Asian women formed.

The head of the Dragon ladies was Empress Tsu-his.. According to history she was a very difficult woman in beheading, strangling, or poisoning those who opposed her rule. While it is not a great reflection on Asian women at the time, the fact that it was an Asian women organization speaks to the independence being sought.

History for Asian women has been tough. You have Asian women organizations like the Dragon Ladies that didn't really help to create a better world for women. Then you have those who came to America in the mid 1800's. These Asian women were mistreated, tricked, and often smuggled into the country for prostitution as well as working as cheap labor.

In the 1960's the first helpful Asian women organizations were started. Most particularly you have the civil rights movement and anti Vietnam War movement that was established. There have been a lot of large and small accomplishments for the Asian women organizations. It is this progress that has inspired more and more women to enter into fields of power in today's time.

Secretary Chao is just one of the Asian women to lead the 21st century towards positive reform. She has already established many new Asian women organizations. She has not only created some Asian women organizations, but also has helped to get more internships, programs, and workshops set up for all Asian Americans to promote gender equality. Asian women are now able to hold offices and account for more than half of the Asian Americans in politics.
